Prostate Cryotherapy

Prostate Cryotherapy

Prostate cryosurgery is a 1-2 hour minimally invasive procedure which eradicates prostate cancer by freeze shocking the cancer cells. The procedure is performed by a specially trained urologic surgeon who inserts ultra-thin 17 gauge needles through an area between the scrotum and anus under general anesthesia. Under ultrasound and thermosensor guidance extreme subzero temperatures are delivered to the cancerous prostate and an “ice ball” is visualized as is travels thru the prostate gland. Benefits of cryosurgery include a fast recovery coupled with very effective cancer destruction. In fact, cryotherapy has become a useful treatment choice in men who have had prostate cancer recur after radiation therapy. One limitation to cryoablation is that erectile function is less well preserved compared to nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy and radioactive prostate seed implantation. Five, seven and 10 year follow data support the use of prostate cryoablation as a genuine treatment option for localized prostate cancer as well as prostate cancer failing to respond to either external beam radiation or a radioactive seed implant.
