TUNA is an office based procedure used to treat symptoms from an enlarged prostate (BPH). The acronym stands for Transurethral Needle Ablation of the prostate. TUNA has gained popularity among patients and urologists because it effectively treats BPH symptoms and patients can return to work within 2-3 days of the procedure. They are able to go off costly prostate medications within 3-4 weeks of the procedure. Side effects are minimal especially when compared to the standard prostate operation called a TURP or in laymen’s terms “the roto-rooter job”. Younger men find this option attractive due to the low impact on sexual function and the ability to go off medications. Success rates are in the 70-80% range in appropriately selected men and results are durable out to 5 years and possible longer in men who initially respond to therapy. Men with very large prostates may not be a good candidate for this form of therapy, and they may be better served with prostate microwave therapy.
